Check the cutoff, not just the label
Most “free cancellation” rates have a deadline — often 24 to 72 hours before check-in — after which the full charge applies. The badge shows on the search page regardless of how close that deadline is to your actual travel date, so always click through to the specific date.
Know who’s actually processing the refund
Booking through a third-party site instead of directly with the hotel adds a middleman to the refund process. If something goes wrong, you’re now troubleshooting with the booking platform, not the property — which usually takes longer.
Watch for the deposit exception
Some “free cancellation” rates still charge a non-refundable deposit upfront, with only the remaining balance protected. Read the actual cancellation policy line, not just the green badge, before you book.
